Step by step

1. Remove switch plates, wall art, and furniture from the work area.
2. Patch holes, lightly sand rough spots, and wipe the walls clean.
3. Protect trim and floors with painter's tape and a drop cloth.
4. Cut in around edges, then roll the walls in overlapping sections.
5. Let the first coat dry according to the label before adding the second.
6. Remove tape while the final coat is slightly soft, then reinstall hardware.

• Garden soil and compost

Step by step

1. Choose a level spot with at least six hours of sunlight.
2. Mark the footprint and remove grass, roots, and large stones.
3. Cut boards to length, then assemble the corners with exterior screws.
4. Set the frame in place and check each side with a level.
5. Fill the bed with a blend of garden soil and compost.
6. Water thoroughly, let the soil settle, and add more soil before planting.

• Two shelf brackets rated for the load
• Stud finder and level
• Drill, screws, and wall anchors
• Sandpaper, stain or paint, and a brush

Step by step

1. Measure the wall and mark the shelf height with a level.
2. Locate studs and position the brackets so the shelf is supported evenly.
3. Sand the board smooth and finish it before mounting, if desired.
4. Secure brackets to studs; use rated anchors where a stud is unavailable.
5. Set the shelf on the brackets and fasten it from underneath.
6. Test the shelf with light pressure before loading it gradually and evenly.
