How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

A simple raised bed gives you tidy planting space, easier soil control, and a project that can usually be finished in a day with basic tools.

What you'll need

  • Untreated cedar or other suitable exterior lumber
  • Exterior-rated screws
  • Drill and driver bit
  • Tape measure and level
  • Shovel and rake
  • Garden soil and compost

Choose the right spot

Pick a location with enough sunlight for what you plan to grow and access to water. Keep the bed narrow enough that you can comfortably reach the center without stepping into the soil.

Step by step

  1. Mark the bed footprint and confirm the layout.
  2. Remove grass, roots, and large stones from the area.
  3. Cut the lumber to your chosen dimensions.
  4. Assemble the corners with exterior-rated screws.
  5. Set the frame in place and check it for level.
  6. Fill with an appropriate soil and compost blend.
  7. Water the bed to settle the soil, then top it up as needed.

Helpful planning tips

  • Avoid treated lumber not intended for garden use.
  • Check drainage before filling the bed.
  • Plan paths around the bed before placing it permanently.
  • Expect fresh soil to settle after watering.
