DIY PROJECT GUIDE
Build a basic fence section
Plan a straight fence run with sensible post spacing, panels, gates, and a material estimate before digging begins.
What you will need
- Fence panels or pickets and rails
- Posts rated for the installation
- Concrete or approved post-setting material
- Exterior-rated brackets and fasteners
- Gate hardware if needed
- String line, stakes, level, tape, and digging tools
Step by step
- Confirm property boundaries, easements, utilities, and local requirements before digging.
- Measure the fence run and mark gate and corner locations.
- Lay out post locations according to the selected fence system.
- Dig post holes to the depth and diameter appropriate for local conditions and product instructions.
- Set posts plumb and aligned, then allow the setting material to cure as required.
- Install panels or rails while checking level and consistent clearance.
- Install gates, hardware, caps, and any finish or protection required.
Before digging
Fence rules can vary by location, and buried utilities are not forgiving. Confirm the property line and utility locations before the first shovel bite.
