How to Paint a Room
A clean paint job is mostly won before the roller touches the wall. This guide walks through prep, painting order, supplies, and the small details that keep a weekend project from turning into a touch-up marathon.

Before you start
Check the wall condition, patch damage, and decide whether primer is needed. Dark-to-light color changes, stains, bare drywall, or repaired areas can benefit from primer. Follow the paint manufacturer's instructions for surface prep and dry time.
Step by step
- Move furniture away from the walls and protect the floor.
- Remove switch plates, outlet covers, nails, and loose hardware.
- Patch holes, sand rough spots, and wipe dust from the walls.
- Tape only where needed and press edges down firmly.
- Cut in around ceilings, corners, trim, windows, and doors.
- Roll paint in manageable sections with overlapping passes.
- Allow the first coat to dry fully before deciding whether a second coat is needed.
- Remove tape carefully, reinstall hardware, and inspect for missed spots.
