Resurface an existing deck
Replace worn decking while keeping sound framing, with a practical plan for inspection, board quantities, layout, fastening, and finishing.
What you will need
- Decking boards
- Exterior-rated fasteners or approved hidden-fastener system
- Replacement framing lumber if inspection finds damage
- Joist protection where appropriate
- Fascia or trim boards
- Pry bar, drill/driver, saw, tape, square, and safety gear
Step by step
- Inspect framing, footings, connections, and guard components before assuming the structure can be reused.
- Measure the deck and estimate boards with an allowance for waste and defects.
- Remove old decking carefully so framing can be inspected as it is exposed.
- Repair damaged framing and add blocking where the new decking system requires it.
- Plan board direction, joints, and spacing before fastening the first row.
- Install decking using fasteners and spacing specified by the manufacturer.
- Trim edges, install fascia, clean the surface, and apply finish if the material requires it.
Do not hide framing problems
New boards can make an old deck look healthy while serious framing problems remain underneath. If structural components are rotted, loose, undersized, or questionable, repair or professional evaluation belongs ahead of cosmetics.
