How to Install a Simple Wall Shelf

A shelf is a compact project with a big payoff. The key is choosing hardware that matches the load and fastening into solid structure whenever possible.

What you'll need

  • Shelf board
  • Two or more shelf brackets
  • Stud finder
  • Level and tape measure
  • Drill and driver bits
  • Appropriate screws and anchors

Before mounting

Check the bracket and anchor load ratings, then think about what the shelf will hold. Heavy shelves or valuable items should be fastened into studs or other solid backing whenever possible.

Step by step

  1. Choose the shelf height and mark a light level reference line.
  2. Locate studs and mark their centers.
  3. Position brackets so the shelf is supported evenly.
  4. Drill pilot holes where appropriate and fasten brackets securely.
  5. Use properly rated anchors only where solid framing is unavailable.
  6. Place the shelf board on the brackets and fasten it from underneath if the bracket design allows.
  7. Apply light pressure to test stability before gradually loading the shelf.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using drywall anchors that are not rated for the intended load
  • Mounting brackets too far apart for the shelf material
  • Skipping a level check before drilling
  • Assuming every stud finder indication is the stud center
