How to mulch a garden bed
A good mulch job starts with measuring the bed and preparing the soil surface. Use this guide to plan material quantity and avoid piling mulch where it can cause problems.
1. Measure the bed
Measure the length and width of rectangular areas. For irregular beds, divide the space into smaller shapes and estimate each section. Record the total area before buying material.
2. Choose a practical depth
The right depth depends on the mulch material, existing mulch, plants, soil conditions, and your goal. Measure what is already present instead of automatically adding a full new layer every season.
3. Calculate the quantity

4. Prepare before spreading
- Remove large weeds and unwanted debris.
- Define bed edges before spreading material.
- Address drainage or soil issues that mulch would otherwise hide.
- Keep the work area clear of irrigation heads and other fixtures.
5. Spread evenly
Distribute mulch in small piles across the bed, then rake it into an even layer. Avoid burying plant crowns and avoid mounding mulch directly against tree trunks, shrub stems, siding, or other moisture-sensitive surfaces.
6. Check the finished depth
Use a small ruler or tape measure in several spots. Move excess material from thick areas into thin areas rather than simply adding more.
