How many pavers do I need for a patio?
Calculate the patio area, divide by the face area of one paver, and add waste for cuts and breakage. Base material should be estimated separately by volume.
The paver-count formula
Multiply patio length × width to find square feet. For rectangular pavers measured in inches, multiply paver length × paver width and divide by 144 to convert the face area to square feet. Divide patio area by paver area, then add your waste allowance and round up.
Example: 10 ft × 12 ft patio
A 10-by-12-foot patio covers 120 square feet. A 12-by-12-inch paver covers 1 square foot, so the starting count is 120 pavers. With a 10% waste allowance, the planning quantity becomes 132 pavers.
Do not forget the base
Pavers are only the visible surface. A durable installation also depends on excavation, a properly prepared and compacted base, bedding material, edge restraint, drainage, and the requirements for your chosen paver system.
