FENCE PLANNING
How many fence panels do I need?
Start with the total straight-run length, subtract gate openings, then divide the remaining run by the actual panel width.
Example
For an 80-foot fence run with one 4-foot gate, about 76 feet remains for panels. With 8-foot panels, 76 ÷ 8 = 9.5, so the planning estimate is 10 panels. Post quantity depends on layout, ends, corners, and gate posts.
Measure before buying
- Confirm actual panel width and post spacing.
- Account for gates, corners, ends, and changes in direction.
- Sloped sites may require stepped or racked installation.
- Check property lines, utilities, permits, and local fence rules before digging.
