How many deck boards do I need?
Board count depends on deck dimensions, actual board width, the gap between boards, stock length, layout, and waste.
How the estimate works
Estimate how many board rows fit across the deck using board width plus the planned gap. Then determine how many stock boards are needed to span each row and add a waste allowance.
Why board count varies
- Nominal board sizes are not the same as actual dimensions.
- Picture-frame borders and angled layouts change the cutting plan.
- Board lengths affect seams and offcuts.
- Existing framing condition and spacing should be verified before resurfacing.
