Paver Patio Planning Guide

Plan pavers, base material, waste, drainage, and installation supplies before digging.

Use the paver patio calculator โ†’

1. Measure the finished patio

Measure the planned length and width, or split an irregular layout into simple rectangles. Establish the finished elevation and drainage direction before excavation.

2. Calculate pavers and waste

Use the actual paver dimensions and include extra units for cuts, breakage, pattern layout, and future repairs. More complicated patterns generally create more offcuts.

3. Plan the base

A stable patio depends on excavation, compacted aggregate base, and a consistent bedding layer. Required depths vary with soil, climate, drainage, loading, and the paver manufacturer's system.

4. Remember the supporting materials

5. Check drainage before setting pavers

The patio should shed water away from structures and avoid creating low spots. Verify local drainage considerations before installation, especially near foundations, doors, and neighboring property.
