How the paint estimate works
The calculator estimates the total wall area from room length, width, and wall height. It subtracts the door and window area you enter, multiplies the paintable area by the number of coats, then divides by your selected coverage per gallon.
How to measure your room
- Measure the room length and width in feet.
- Measure from floor to ceiling for wall height.
- Estimate the combined square footage of doors and windows.
- Choose one, two, or three coats based on the job.
- Use the coverage printed on your paint can when available.
Should I plan for two coats?
Two coats are a practical planning assumption for many repainting jobs, especially when changing color or aiming for even coverage. Actual coverage varies with the paint, surface texture, color change, application method, and wall condition, so the manufacturer's instructions should win any argument.
Before buying paint
Round your purchasing decision around the container sizes sold by your chosen brand and keep touch-ups in mind. Primer, ceilings, trim, cabinets, and unusually porous surfaces should be estimated separately.
