Insulation Planning Guide

Plan coverage, product sizing, air sealing, and supporting materials before opening the first pack.

1. Measure the insulated surfaces

Measure wall length and height and subtract major openings. Treat ceilings, attic floors, knee walls, and other assemblies separately because their insulation requirements may differ.

2. Confirm the required R-value

Choose insulation based on your climate, local requirements, wall or ceiling assembly, and available cavity depth. The calculator estimates quantity only and does not select the required thermal performance.

3. Match the product to the framing

Check stud spacing, cavity depth, batt width, package coverage, and whether the product is faced or unfaced. Compression and gaps can reduce performance.

4. Plan air sealing first

Insulation works best when air leaks are addressed. Before insulating, inspect penetrations, framing gaps, top and bottom plates, and other leakage paths appropriate to the assembly.

5. Include the supporting supplies

6. Follow product and local guidance

Keep required clearances around heat-producing equipment and verify electrical, moisture, fire-blocking, and ventilation considerations before closing the assembly.
