How much roofing do I need?
Roofing quantities are based on actual roof surface area, not just the building footprint. Pitch increases surface area, then waste and product coverage determine the final number of squares or bundles.
What is a roofing square?
One roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof area. After estimating the sloped roof surface and adding waste, divide by 100 to estimate roofing squares.
Why pitch matters
A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint. Our roofing calculator applies a pitch multiplier based on the rise per 12 inches of run, then adds your selected waste allowance.
Bundles depend on the product
Do not assume every bundle covers the same area. Use the coverage stated for the roofing product you intend to purchase, and round up to whole bundles.
Important planning limits
- Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, and multiple sections should be measured section by section.
- Starter material, ridge caps, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, and fasteners are separate from field-shingle quantity.
- Roof work involves serious fall hazards and may require permits or code-specific assemblies.
