How much insulation do I need?
Estimate the net wall area, add a small waste allowance, then divide by the square-foot coverage listed on the insulation package.
How the estimate works
For four walls, calculate the room perimeter and multiply by wall height. Subtract doors and windows, then add waste before dividing by the coverage per pack.
Quantity is only part of the job
- Choose an insulation product appropriate for the assembly and required R-value.
- Match material thickness to the cavity and installation method.
- Air sealing, moisture control, fire safety, and ventilation can be just as important as coverage.
- Follow local code and manufacturer requirements.
