How much flooring should I buy?
Start with room length multiplied by room width. Then add a waste allowance for cuts, damaged pieces, pattern matching, and future repairs. The calculator converts that adjusted area into whole boxes based on the coverage printed on the flooring package.
Measuring tips
- Measure the longest length and width of the floor area.
- Break irregular rooms into rectangles and estimate each section separately.
- Check the exact square-foot coverage per box before purchasing.
- Select a waste allowance appropriate for your layout and material.
- Enter the current box price if you want a quick material-cost estimate.
Why include waste?
Flooring rarely installs with zero offcuts. Straightforward rectangular rooms may need less extra material than rooms with many corners or patterned layouts. Manufacturer installation instructions can also specify an appropriate overage.
What the estimate does not include
Underlayment, moisture barriers, transitions, trim, adhesive, fasteners, subfloor repair, delivery, taxes, and installation labor are separate from the primary flooring estimate.
